Smoke Alert- Prescribed Burn At Live Oaks Ranch June 19, 2026
June 16, 2026 – Calistoga, CA – Sonoma Land Trust and CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit announced plans to conduct a 71-acre prescribed burn at Live Oaks Ranch Preserve in Knights Valley near Calistoga, on Friday, June 19, 2026
The burn will begin as early as 9:00 am and will be managed by the CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit in partnership with Sonoma Land Trust. This collaborative initiative is part of a wider community effort to increase fire resiliency throughout the region.
Live Oaks Ranch was affected by the 2017 Tubbs Fire. Sonoma Land Trust has conducted subsequent understory thinning and pile burning to reduce dead material and improve the health of the surviving trees over the past six years. The introduction of low-intensity prescribed fire when conditions are right is the next step to support forest health and reduce the intensity of future wildfires.
The prescribed burn will be conducted under the CalVTP Program, which expedites the implementation of vegetation treatments to reduce wildfire risk while conserving natural resources.
The burn will be conducted by prescribed fire managers from CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit, with support from local fire district partners, Sonoma Land Trust staff, and the Northern Sonoma County Air Pollution Control District.
Safety is the top priority when burning, and CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit will make the decision to burn once they have checked weather conditions and evaluated all safety protocols.
**Smoke and Traffic Advisory**
The prescribed burns will take place on a ridge near the Sonoma/Napa County line in Knights Valley. Smoke may be visible from Calistoga as well as Highway 128. The prescribed burn will start as early as 9:00 am and conclude around 5:00 pm. The burn unit may continue to produce a lesser amount of smoke in the days following burning operations. The burn unit will be monitored by fire personnel.
If you see smoke from this burn, please refrain from calling 911.
