Nature Webinar Series

Language of the Land: Rangeland Ecology

Free Event

Online Zoom Webinar

Wednesday, September 30, 7pm-8:30pm

The California grasslands of today are quite different than they used to be. Join Devii Rao for this presentation where you will learn about their transition from native plant species to being dominated by non-native plants. We’ll look at the ecological importance of California grasslands and the role of livestock grazing in controlling weeds, reducing fire fuels, and conserving native plants and wildlife. Finally, we’ll explore the tradeoffs with grazing, such as greenhouse gas emissions and water quality, along with mitigation measures that can address these concerns.

Spanish interpretation provided.

Devii Rao is the Livestock and Natural Resources Advisor at the University of California Cooperative Extension, serving Sonoma and Marin counties. Prior to coming to the North Bay, she was in the same role for 10 years in San Benito, Monterey, and Santa Cruz counties where her program focused on targeted grazing, prescribed burning, and climate change mitigation on working rangelands. She is currently doing a needs assessment to help develop her new research and education program, which will likely include weed management, virtual fencing, and grazing for fuels reduction and conservation.
