Camille Matson, gift planning and donor relations manager, recommends Creekside Park in Monte Rio

On a sunny weekend afternoon you can find my family and me at the Creekside Park in Monte Rio enjoying the Russian River Skate Park and Communal Orchard and Farm. This small park is doing some heavy lifting for West County residents, bringing the community together for healthy activities outdoors. It features an art wall, walking path, transit stop, cafe, skatepark, community garden and orchard, public restrooms, and a bike aid station for cyclists.

As a resident of rural West County I often seek gathering places where I can engage with my neighbors in a family-friendly environment. While my kids skateboard, I wander the gravel loop trail dotted with native Elderberry and Buckeye trees. California Bay Laurel and Coastal Redwoods shade the bank of Dutch Bill Creek, a tributary of the Russian River. After a couple of hours of skateboarding the kids jump in the swimming hole to cool off.

I admire the garden, lovingly tended by the community with wildflowers and vegetables alternating between hazelnut and fruit trees before I sit and read in the sunshine. We meet new friends and catch up with our neighbors. We often meet people escaping the heat inland or taking a day trip north from the Bay Area.

Parks like this are essential to our communities providing access to nature and community for small town residents and folks in rural areas. Maybe I’ll see you there next time!
