Hood Mountain

Over a 10-year period, Sonoma Land Trust transferred 6 parcels of land to expand the Hood Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve, now a 3,600-acre wilderness park on the edge of the Sonoma Valley. The park offers more than 19 miles of trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. And at 2,730 feet, Hood Mountain is the highest peak in the Mayacamas Mountains, offering stunning views of the Sonoma Valley and beyond.

Sonoma Valley Regional Park

In 2015, Sonoma Land Trust acquired 29 acres known as the “Curreri Addition” along Highway 12, with partial funding from the Sonoma County Ag + Open Space. The land was then transferred to Regional Parks to be added to the 162-acre Sonoma Valley Regional Park, and is a vital part of the Sonoma Valley Wildlife Corridor. It sits in the pinch point of the Corridor, connecting more than 9,000 acres of protected wildlife habitat in the Mayacamas and on Sonoma Mountain.

Tolay Lake Regional Park

In 2007, Sonoma Land Trust purchased a 1,665-acre property in southern Sonoma County at risk of subdivision and vineyard development and named it Tolay Creek Ranch. After nearly 10 years of resource assessments, habitat enhancement and creek restoration activities, Sonoma Land Trust donated the protected land to Sonoma County Regional Parks, doubling the size of Tolay Lake Regional Park to 3,400 acres making it one of the largest of Sonoma County’s regional parks.

Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park

Sonoma Land Trust was part of a historic moment for land conservation and public recreation in Sonoma County, as it joined several local and regional partners in 2025 to acquire the 1,517-acre Monte Rio Redwoods Expansion property. Led by Save the Redwoods League, the project culminated in the purchase and transfer of the property to Sonoma County Regional Parks to expand Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Open Space Preserve.

Red Hill Sonoma Coast State Park

In 2000, 910 acres of Red Hill Ranch were permanently conserved through a partnership led by Sonoma Land Trust, alongside California State Parks, Sonoma County Ag + Open Space, California State Coastal Conservancy, and local government agencies. It was transferred to State Parks in 2003, and our early leadership led to the creation of the wildly popular Red Hill Trail, which remains wild, accessible, and protected thanks to our regional coalition. Red Hill Trail was also recently voted Sonoma Magazine’s top hiking spot in Sonoma County, offering sweeping coastal views, wildflowers, and a rare walk through protected coastal landscapes.

San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge

In 2005, Sonoma Land Trust acquired the 2,327-acre Sears Point property, and in 2015 completed one of the largest tidal wetland restoration projects on the Bay’s north shore by breaching levees and reconnecting more than 1,000 acres of historic marsh to the tides for the first time in more than a century. The restoration created vital habitat for migratory birds along the Pacific Flyway and species such as Ridgway’s rail and the salt marsh harvest mouse, while also helping buffer the shoreline from rising seas. Today, visitors can experience this landscape firsthand on the 4-mile segment of the regional Bay Trail at Sears Point. The paved multi-use trail offers sweeping views of San Pablo Bay, restored wetlands, and Mount Tamalpais in the distance—inviting people to walk, bike, and witness the return of nature along Sonoma County’s shoreline.
