We base our program expense ratio on a 3-year rolling expense average, another best practice, due to the multi-year nature of land conservation work.

We uphold our commitment to accountability through financial transparency, strong accreditation practices, and the effective use of resources, ensuring our efforts make a lasting difference across Sonoma County.

For the fiscal year ending June 2026, Sonoma Land Trust has an annual operating budget of approximately $12.4 million, which is based on all annual expenses except for land transactions.

Accurate financial reporting is a key part of our commitment to conduct our business ethically and remain true to our purpose.

Our program expense ratio is strong based on industry standards. Charity Navigator emphasizes “a preference for 70% or more of expenses to be directed towards programs.” And they encourage donors to balance “overhead with other factors to ensure a more nuanced evaluation of a charity’s impact.”
In 2025, Sonoma Land Trust transitioned to a fiscal year ending June 30 to better align with private and government funders and to improve annual planning and budgeting.
